A Damned Iowa Greyhound: The Civil War Letters of William Henry Harrison Clayton
Published in Hardcover by Iowa State University Press (June, 1998)
Authors: William Henry Harrison Clayton and Donald C., III Elder
Average review score:

A spellbinding look at the war from the trenches
A wonderful compililation of letters from an infantryman in an Iowa regiment. Sgt Clayton was involved in actions in Missouri, Louisiana, and Alabama, including a stint as a confederate prisoner. Narrative anb pictures by Dr. Elder really rounded this book out. Clayton was an excellent writer and gives incredible insight into army life and the fighting of the civil war. Best of all you get a flavor for the general perceptions of the common soldier, the ones charged with the dirty work.

I thoroughly enjoyed this highly readable book, in fact resented any interruptions while trying to read it. Thank you, Dr. Elder!!

A Dangerous Thing

Masterful Police Procedural
When the Director of the University of Eastern Lancashire is discovered dead with a bullet in his head, the relentless and intimidating figure of Detective Inspector Percy Peach jumps into action. His interviewing technique is pure genius as he gleans every possible scintilla of information from his subject.

This is a classic police procedural as DI Peach visits suspect after suspect and slowly puts together the puzzle of who murdered Claptrap Clark. The entertainment lies in Peach's interviewing style, an elaborate act which is designed to keep his adversary unbalanced and in a constant state of nervousness.

Hilarious scenes are provided intermittently throughout the book when Peach reports to his superior, Superintendent Thomas Tucker. Showing as little respect as possible, putting forward outrageous theories and baiting his boss at every opportunity, I found myself looking forward to every meeting with ever greater enthusiasm.

This is a terrific book that provides a very well constructed mystery, investigated by a character who provides consistent entertainment. It's part of a series of books featuring Inspector Peach, which is good news because one book of Peach is definitely not enough.

Dark Horse: The Private Life of George Harrison
Published in Paperback by Plume (November, 1991)
Authors: Geoffrey Giuliano and George Giuliano
Average review score:

A Fantastic Book
This book is astounding. Geoffrey Gulliano describes in detail the life of the man so few people know about because of his reputation as the "Quiet Beatle". This book takes you from George's early life in Liverpool to his recent one, as an established solo artist. It contains elements such as George's mistakes in life, such as his drug use, along with his accomplishments. A fantastic book on a fantastic man.

An amazing riddle
A masterly review of the history and science of a celebrated problem in the history of astronomy. Every chance I get I go out at night and look up at the dark sky and try to take in all that it means.+++

Fun Story - Great Illustrations
This is a great book for summer! It's mostley just fun, but it does touch on responsibility too (but not so it seems like you're getting a lesson). I'd recommend it to anyone, but especially boys, who are begining to read chapter books. There are a couple pictures in each chapter, which also make it a fun book.

One of the best Sci-fi books ever
When a massive crystal is found in the frozen wastes of Antartica scientists must find out whether it is natural or extra-terriestrial. When they start experiencing strange dreams life becomes a question of survival as their own government tries to hide their findings. Combining the best of the Sci-fi Genre with an action thriller Craig Harrison builds on the success of the "Quiet Earth" to bring you the best example of New Zealand fiction.

A Deadly Bouquet: A Gardening Mystery

strong Solomon mystery
It is going to be a wedding extravagance and the mother of the bride is driving florist Bretta Solomon crazy with all weird endless string of ideas. Other River City, Missouri merchants are also going certifiable trying to satisfy a woman whose plans keep changing and turning more complicated and stranger by the second. Days before the wedding, Evelyn Montgomery calls for a meeting to include Sonya the event coordinator, Dana the caterer, and Claire the hair stylist.

Before Evelyn can ever speak, Oliver dies from a heart attack while staring at the other merchants.. Late that same day, Bretta visits Claire's Hair Salon because the stylist hinted she knows something about Oliver' death. Bretta arrives at the beauty shop too late because Claire is dead, the victim of a murderer. A few days later one of Claire's clients is killed in a gas explosion and Bretta thinks all the deaths are linked. Unable to keep her curiosity in check, Bretta decides to investigate not realizing that somebody will go to any lengths to stop her.

This is the fourth Solomon mystery and it is the best by far. The characters are all likable, even the pesky mother of the bride, so readers won't want any person in A DEADLY BOUQUET to be the villain. The climax is shocking, and nobody will be able to figure out what is really going on until Janis Harrison reveals the perpetrator in her cerebral puzzler that is nothing short of genius.

Too Hot!!
This book is based on a film which was called Body of Evidence. The film stared Madonna,William Defoe, and Joe Mantegna. If the movie wasn't sexy enough then they put the book out. The book is very very good. It is much more erotic than the film. I would recomend this book to everyone

Diggin' In and Piggin' Out: The Truth About Food and Men
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (May, 1997)
Authors: Roger L. Welsch and Jim Harrison
Average review score:

Men are from Burgers - Who knows about women?
This wonderfully entertaining book reveals the relationship that men have to food in our culture, laid out through a hugely entertaining set of stories and recipes. It explains why my friends' father-daughter Indian Princess group lasted so long - men's relationship to food is to food-as-ceremony. The book is primarily hilarious, with recipes that aren't precise but more of artistic directions - feel free to make your ribs with plenty of bourbon for the cook and a hammock and an old dog at your feet!
